What’s The Difference Between Shower Curtain And Liner?

Last Updated on November 30, 2019 by Terry Ohara

This is a question I get a lot from our readers and it is a pretty confusing issue, especially for our male readers, what is a shower curtain and what is a liner, and what is the difference between the two. I can honestly say that I didn’t know the difference for a long time myself, but with a little help and guidance I seem to understand the difference and I feel capable of explaining it to you as well. Today I’m going to talk about what a shower curtain is, what a shower liner is, what is the difference between them, and which one you will need for your shower. Without further ado, let’s get on with it.

Let’s start with the liners first. A liner is a type of curtain that is made of fabric, plastic or vinyl and is designed to hang inside the bathtub, so it will keep the water inside the bathtub and not let it go outside. This is where most readers will get confused since most of us including me have thought that this is a shower curtain. However, this is named liner and this will protect your bathroom from all the water that can get out of the shower and making it a safer place in the process. This is also essential for your bathroom in my opinion, it is extremely important to have a shower liner in your shower to ensure you and your family’s safety, which should always be your priority regardless of the circumstances.

There are different types of shower liners that you can find in the market, starting to form the most basic and cheap models, to more complicated and expensive models, depending on your budget and your preferences. Budget models most of the time have a sheet of plastic on the bottom to keep the lining in the tub and they will require regular maintenance with bleach or vinegar to keep the mold and mildew away. On the other hand, expensive models are made out of premium materials that are also mildew resistant and are super easy to clean in the long run, they can be made out of different vinyl and fabric.

Now onto shower curtains. A shower curtain unlike the liner that has to keep water at bay serves other functions, which is to provide privacy in the shower and to serve as a piece of decor. Also, it is worth mentioning that a shower curtain will sit on the outside of your bathtub and it is not meant to get wet and the liner also protects this. They are generally made out of thicker fabric, that isn’t see-through like a liner, and are always made out of moisture-resistant material to prevent mold and mildew.

So which one do you need? You need to have a shower liner, and I have to say it again it is necessary, however, on the other hand, a shower curtain is a nice addition, and you will also find out that best shower curtains have liners as well.
